I was a tad hesitant to order this, because I’ve not always had the best of luck with poly/cotton blends ordered online–sometimes they look fine in photos on the screen, but when you get them they feel a bit flimsy and have that “cheap polyester sheen” to them, if you know what I mean. But since Fabric Market’s fabrics have always been so great, I went ahead.
I’m so glad I did! There is absolutely NO “cheap poly sheen” on this fabric! And it feels great against the skin (another issue I sometimes have with poly blends). It’s light but opaque (no need for lining), it cuts well and sews beautifully, it has a lovely, just very slightly stiff drape exactly like a poplin should, it washes without the tiniest bit of bleed or fade. And of course, there is the big benefit of a poly-cotton blend: it doesn’t come out of the dryer in a mass of wrinkles.
The only caution is that since it is a poly blend, be careful with the iron heat. I was ironing a seam and forgot I wasn’t working with 100% cotton, so turned the iron up too high and got a tiny scorch mark. Luckily it’s barely visible given the fabric’s pattern, and I didn’t have any further problems once I turned down the heat a bit and started using a pressing cloth (which I should have done to begin with, of course, so that’s on me, not the fabric). Also, be aware that there is the tiniest bit of stretch on the grainline, but none horizontally. I don’t think it’s enough to be an issue, and it drapes beautifully either way so it can be cut across the grain if you want some horizontal stretch, but it’s something to be aware of. (It also makes fantastic bias strips, and would be lovely as bias trim on a white or solid-colored garment.)
I have never failed to be delighted with fabrics from The Fabric Market, and this is no exception. If you’re looking for a great fabric at a great price to make some pretty summer tops or dresses, you can’t go wrong with this one. I’m actually thinking I should order more, to make a dress in addition to the top I’m making (which is Butterick 5616, version C–sleeveless button-down top with two breast pockets–photo is one almost-finished front piece).
