Basic Skirt Variation: Add a Flounce!
I’m back again today with the third and final version of the Basic Skirt! If you’ve been following along, this year I’m working through Cal Patch’s book, Design It Yourself Clothes. I started with the basic skirt here. Then I used that original pattern to draft a denim skirt shown here. And here is the final variation: adding a yoke and a ruffle or flounce.
Cal Patch walks you through using the basic skirt to draft this version by closing the darts and drafting a yoke instead. The same is done on the back piece. Then she gives instructions for drafting a ruffle. I had a vision of this skirt being more business appropriate and felt the ruffle was a more informal than I wanted. So I want a little rogue and drafted a circle flounce instead. If you’ve never drafted a circle flounce, this is a great tutorial.
I love that this skirt can be playful or more formal depending on the fabric choice. I chose a navy & white suiting, but a bright fabric or a soft denim would make it more appropriate for every-day!
The yoke is a practical but interesting design feature and the flounce brings an element of fun. As you can see, there is an unending number of styles you can create with a basic skirt pattern. For even more ideas, you might grab a copy of Metric Pattern Cutting for Women’s Wear by Winifred Aldrich. If you’d like to learn more about sewing or even pattern drafting, I teach sewing classes in NE Bakersfield. Visit my website, SewBakersfield.com, for details!
If you’d like to skip the drafting process, here is a pattern you could use to create the same style!
I’ll be back in two weeks to share another project for you! Until then, be sure to post any projects you make with fabrics from TheFabricMarket.com on our Facebook Page!
