Make Your Own Joggers

Joggers have made a comeback! All you have to do is attend your local college sports event or walk the aisles of Target and you’ll witness a veritable Joggers Fashion Show!

I was recently given a chance to try the M is for Moto Joggers sewing pattern by a new designer, Hatchings Patterns. Elizabeth asked me to join a blogging tour to get the word out about the pattern and I had a great time making several pairs. You can see more pictures and get more pattern details on my post here.

According to the pattern listing, “Any knit or woven fabric with a small amount of crosswise stretch (that stretches one way, across the width of the fabric) can be used for this pattern.  Best results are achieved if a rib knit is used for the leg cuffs.” For my first pair I chose a mid-heavy weight knit with a lighter gray solid on one side and a diagonal black and gray stripe on the other. I used the stripe for the main portion of the pants and because it had great stretch and good recovery, I simply used the back side, the lighter gray, for the cuffs. The rise in this pattern is very generous, “designed to sit 2 inches below the natural waist, with extra room across the hips, a very slightly dropped crotch and skinny/tapered legs. It includes several different length and cuff finishing options…”

I liked the first pair so much, I decided to make another in the capri/below knee length a size down and with a lower rise. This fabric is a thinner weight charcoal and so soft. Again, I made the cuffs of the same fabric. The pattern instructs you to add an inch if your fabric doesn’t have a lot of stretch. I might do that next time, but otherwise, I love this pair!

For my third pair, I decided to go back to full length, keep in the smaller size and lower rise, but add the pocket and moto knee detailing. It’s hard to pick a favorite pair, but I love this version too! These pants are so comfy and a cinch to sew together. The waistband is made using wide braided elastic sewn to the raw edge of the waist, turned down, then sewn in place with parallel rows of stitching, stretch-n-sew style. After making the first pair, my second pair went together (cut and sewn) in just one hour! These took a little longer with the quilted knee, but they make a great addition.M is for Moto Joggers | TheFabricMarket.comThe M is for Moto pattern is on sale for $6.50 through October 31st (Australian time!). Hi Jaime. I found you online after searching up reviews on this pattern. I have to say your last two makes are my favorites I’ve seen. I am still working through my first pair but I really bunged up. I decided to drop the rise right off the gate, but I may have taken too much off – I’m at a place where I can sneak in a 1″ elastic for the waist, or suck it up a slap on a whole new waistband. I was expecting a fit like I see in your bottom two photos based on my measurements (I was inbetween and took the smaller of the two), but I’m still taking in the legs, the waist, even the crotch. Grrrr. Definitely not a quick sew for me. I haven’t basted, ripped, and re-basted so much in my life, and just for a pair of sweats! I can’t find a date on this blog post, but I suspect it’s old. If you have any tips or tricks for a next pair, let me know! I went gaga over your full length grey pair – WANT!

Hi Jai! Yes, I made these in October 2015 and I still wear them to this day! 🙂 I’m sorry it sounds like you’re having a rough go of it. I go into *a little more detail* on the alterations I made on my blog here: http://madebyjaime.com/fabric/m-is-for-moto-joggers-by-hatchling-patterns/ After the first pair, I lowered the waist by 3 3/4 inches! This was comfortable for me, but may have really changed the intended fit of this pattern. I’m not the coolest cat, but I know how I like things to fit me. I didn’t mess with the crotch or side/leg seams at all, just the rise to get the fit you see in the bottom two pairs. If you’re looking for a trimmer fit than you’re getting, you might try just the lower rise on the next size down to see how that does. I hope you find a good solution! I’d love to see what you come up with! Thanks for stopping by!

I am curious… Would this pattern work well for men’s joggers or is there a separate pattern for that.

Hi Angel, I think this pattern would work for men, but here’s a men’s pattern just in case: https://www.patternsforpirates.com/product/papa-bear-joggers/

Hi, I’m trying to make a pair that look like the adidas ones. It’s for a costume. I’m looking for a good tutorial on how to make them, my issue is I can’t find them and I have a budget for the costume. I’m working on the shirt already. I already have the base for the pants. Here’s a link https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OgwTWrUJn-akp2W-_Gppa70_iHpDzvYQ/view?usp=sharing.

Hi Danielle! For some reason the link doesn’t work for me. I know of several jogger patterns but it sounds like you already have a base pattern. Hopefully you can find the information you’re looking for. Thanks for coming by! – Jaime

    Hi Jamie,
I am having such a difficult time finding/choosing jogger fabric online. Nothing is heavy enough at my local Joann Fabric in Jersey … more like T-shirt fabric. Online I am confused by the fabric weight in ounces and GSM. The gray fabric in your 1st picture is exactly the weight I would like. Could you recommend a link to a suitable fabric?

    Thank you,

    Jen

Hi Jen! Thanks for commenting! Just taking a quick look online, I would maybe recommend something like this (8oz): https://thefabricmarket.com/product/lightweight-heathered-greige-fleece-knit-2/ or this (7oz): https://thefabricmarket.com/product/lightweight-rayon-poly-french-terry-black/. The jersey listed here is labeled as 5oz, so these would be slightly heavier. Just make sure they have the stretch your pattern recommends. They will also send swatches if you want to make double sure. You can see the instructions for that in the FAQs. https://thefabricmarket.com/pages/faq/ Hope that helps!

    Hi jaime! good greetings
I had a question in mind that maybe you can answer, what kind of a thread is used for hardening the jogger upper. Is 167 dtex 48f alright?

    1. Jaime June 15, 2021 at 9:35 am Reply

      Hi Hassan,
Apologies, I’m just now seeing this comment. I use this polyester thread for garment sewing. I’m not sure what you have in mind regarding hardening the jogger upper. I’m not familiar with the specific thread you mentioned, but if it’s a Polyester all-purpose thread, it should work fine.

      Hi Vishal,
There are a lot of great joggers patterns out there. You may be able to find a video on youtube to help you through the process if you learn better visually. Best of luck!

Hi Jaime, I was hoping to get around 20 pairs of joggers made up with a couple of slight modifications.
Do you know anywhere that could help with this? Thanks.
