Mixing Knits & Wovens

If you’ve been out shopping lately, you’ve noticed the trend of mixing knits and wovens. The result is comfortable, but a step up from the every day t-shirt and the combination works great for both work or casual!

If you’ve worked with knits before, you know these tips:

  • Use a ballpoint or stretch needle
  • Adjust your pressure foot pressure to be a little less than usual
  • Seam with a narrow zigzag
  • Hem with a wide zigzag, decorative stitch or double needle
  • Don’t stretch as you sew, just allow your machine to pull the layers through
  • Seam finishes are optional as knits do not unravel

For wovens:

  • Use a Universal Needle: size 10 for lightweight, size 12 for mid weight and 14-16 for heavy wovens
  • Seam with a straight stitch
  • Finish seam allowances with a zigzag or use your overlock machine/serger, as wovens tend to unravel
  • For a shirt like this with a baby or rolled hem, see this tutorial

Be sure to switch to the right needle for each fabric as you sew each one and when joining together, make sure you put your woven on the bottom against your feed dogs.

The Fabric Market carries a nice selection of knits here and here and you can find chiffon here.
